You Take the Controls

Every trial flight puts you in the right-hand seat with full dual controls. Before you fly, Ross explains how the helicopter controls work. Once airborne, he introduces them one at a time and guides you through flying the helicopter yourself — from your first attempts at a hover to flying out over the Bay of Plenty coastline.

No experience required. All you need to bring is yourself, pants or shorts, and covered shoes.

Trial Flight FAQ

Do I actually get to fly the helicopter?
Yes. Before your flight, Ross explains how the helicopter controls work. Once airborne, he introduces the controls one at a time and guides you as you have a go yourself. Depending on the flight and conditions, you’ll experience basic handling, flying the aircraft and your first attempts at hovering.
Do I need any previous flying experience?
Not at all. Trial flights are designed for complete beginners. Ross guides you through everything at your own pace, so you don’t need any previous aviation knowledge or experience.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing, with pants or shorts and covered shoes. Skirts aren’t suitable. Sunglasses can also be useful on bright days.
Can friends or family come and watch?
Yes. Spectators are welcome to come along and watch from the hangar. For safety, spectators must remain inside the hangar doors while the helicopter is operating.
What happens if the weather isn’t suitable?
Flying is weather dependent, so occasionally a flight may need to be postponed. If conditions aren’t suitable to fly safely, we’ll arrange another suitable date with you.
How long are gift vouchers valid for?
Gift vouchers are valid for three years from the date of issue, giving the recipient plenty of time to arrange a flight that suits them.
Can I do a trial flight if I’m thinking about learning to fly?
Absolutely. A trial flight is a great way to experience helicopter flying before committing to training. You’ll meet Ross, fly the Cabri G2 and get a feel for both the aircraft and the training environment. If you decide to continue, any flight time completed during your trial flight can be logged toward your PPL training.
